AdrianBurton is exactly right. You need to borrow a timing light to set it properly.
Set your points while you're at it too. Use a dwell meter. |

I'll have to buy one since no one around has one.

Greg:
You are missing 2 rods on your carburetor and your throttle shafts or the body
that the shafts go thru are more than likley worn out. I recommend getting an
Edelbrock (AFB) 650cfm and a hi riser int. This makes for a very streetable
combination. If you can't get a good deal on one , i can get it for you at my
cost.

You should also check TDC lines up correctly on harmonic balancer. These old engines- parts get changed around and you might not have the correct timing chain cover for your harmonic balancer- which means you will never figure out the timing. Been there!!!
Get a engine stop- about $10 @ Summit. Pull your plugs- put the stop in number 1 and slowly turn the engine w/ a breaker bar via the harmonic balancer. Turn till it stops. MARK the harmonic balancer at the 0 point on timing pointer. Slowly turn the engine in the opposite direction till it stops again- mark. The point between the two marks is TDC.
