You are a lucky guy to have someone like Jim Dinner close by. I really miss his contributions to this website. I couldn't have gotten as far as I have without his input.

Could you share what the "small unheard of mod to 016" was? I have that tranny also and am wondering if this is a mod that I should do.

Thanks

well 016 upper shaft has on each housing spring rh large (I'm not sure if both are in one place or 2nd on other side ) I was busy drinking beer and looking for that players to remove c clip.
he took off the plate and cut each spring one loop , its bit tricky theres a c clamp holding the springs
that allowed the sfhifter move from left to right smoother and not so hard.
I'm sure MR JD does not mind if I told you guys. if you need specific explanation ask him . this guy is pure genius when it comes to mechanics , first he took good look at it then pose ,had a beer and lets go
did you heard of that before ? not me.Smile

LMAO.
Let me explain the change.
We are working on the shifter rod that is located on the top middle of the trans runs left to right.
This shifter rod has two coil springs that keep in centred in the middle of neutral (left/right movement)
On the passengers side of the transmission there is an odd shaped plate directly inline with the shift rod. It has 3 bolts holding it on (10mm wrench)
Put the trans into 1st gear.
Remove the plate
Remove the c-clip from the centre of the cup inside. (spring loaded)
Cut one coil off of both coil springs inside.
Reassemble
Now it should go into the 1st/2nd and 5th/R gates much easier.

Note: if you don't put it into 1st gear to do this job you will over-centre the shift rod and you will need to remove the lock out pin to make it work again. The lock out pin is located on the top right of the shift rod shaft and threads into the case. It looks like a nut or stud on different models.
