Has anyone come up with a relatively inexpensive method of approximating that Euro 12-cylinder sound?

Nope. V-8s sound like v-8s I've heard many. Only the small pistons on a Ferrari/some euro cars make the noise.

Wrong Greg a v8-w/180 degree headers sounds very different , it does'nt sound like a v8 or a v12 but it does produce more power and when you get the rev's up around 8500 to 9300 rpm's it starts to sound like a hive
of bees . Look below at my build and you will see my headers.

Also the sound that the Ferrari makes is atributed to the 19,000 RPMs
it turns and the engine is capable of more revs than that , but the rules
dictate the that limit to every one .You would really be surprised to see the headers they are really very short . The mathematics in designing a set of this caliber is mind blogling but the computer came along and eased the mind of many and engineer. Greg with the knowledge of computers that you have you ought to design some headers , how about it!
